This is a starter telescope that can give good views of brighter objects, like moon and planets and the brighter stars and star clusters, and a couple galaxies.
It is only under very dark skies, with long dark adaptation, and averted vision can one see any faint deep sky objects.
The Autostar system must be learned before finding success with it. Practice a setup and alignment at daytime until you are perfectly comfortable with it. See webpages on assistance with it, like Mike Weasner’s ETX site pages on Autostar.
The #494 controller is the lower of the three in capability. The #495 and the #497 have more features and can be reprogrammed with a computer and cable connection.
The eye lenses are of good quality, as is the main lens. The tripod and motor system are a bit light and flimsy. You should stake or weigh the stand down when you do a setup.
Find a local astronomy club or experienced amateur astronomer for help in use of it, and finding objects. See the Internet on Meade products and general observing. There are books available on using telescopes like this and general Astronomy.
