Physics Question- Beat Frequency and Destructive Interference?
On our worksheet these were the two i’ve been having trouble with. Any help/explanations greatly appreciated.
A pure tone from the speaker takes both paths to the listener’s ear, & resulting difference in path lengths then vreates interference. Length of 1 path can be changed by sliding adjustable u shaped tube @ top. You adjust this tube to find a position that results in complete destructive interference. From this point you measure how far you must pull the end of the tube up to 1st hear destructive interference again. If this distance is 9.20 cm, what’s frequency of sound that’s being used (speed of sound=343m/s)
2 pipes (1 w/ 2 open ends, the 2nd w/ only 1 open end) are sounded @ same time. The beat frequency between their fundamental frequencies is 3.00 Hz, and pipe w/ 2 open ends has the higher frequency. The pipe w/ 2 open ends is 1.30 m long. What’s length of other pipe? (speed of sound=343m/s)
To go from minimum to minimum is a move of half a wavelength. This means that the frequency must be 343/0.184 Hz.
The doubly open pipe has a wavelength of 2.6 meters, so its frequency is 343/2.6 Hz. Subtract 3 to get the frequency of the other pipe; call it f. The wavelength is 343/f, and divide by 4 to get the length of the pipe.
