Why doesn’t the US require people to learn to drive manual?
I’m an American who grew up in Europe and had to learn to drive a manual before getting my license. I didn’t realize that that wasn’t the norm until I moved to the states later as an adult. Why is it that in some countries you are required to learn on a manual, but in the US you only have to learn on an automatic?
Perhaps there is so little demand for manuals, because hardly anybody knows how to drive them…
If people learned how, of course there would be a demand. Having lived overseas for over 20 years I can tell you that MOST people worldwide still drive and still prefer manual transmissions. The US is the exception.
Also, it’s rude to scream. Why not try giving the caps lock a rest?
Driver licensing is done by the states not the federal government, so regulations vary. States found decades ago that huge majorities of Americans buy automatic transmissions and therefore testing on manual was not needed and in fact required testing time and expense the states couldn’t afford. Decades ago, we were required to learn hand signals – in case electric signals didn’t work — but that was dropped after years of electric signals’ reliability.
Europeans have bought manual transmissions to save money, governments have required companies to offer them, and then require drivers to learn how to drive with them. In some ways governments in the US are more flexible than in Europe; in some ways we refuse to consider health insurance, but for regulating driving, Americans have paid for more expensive automatic transmissions and states went with the flow.
