Aid Bte Ear

Aid Bte Ear
Is the teenage years understandable?

Is the teenage years understandable not to want to wear a hearing aid?. I am now 24 I have a severe hearing loss in my left ear i hear normally in my right. I wore a hearing aid when i was 5 until I was in the 8th grade. My mom often thought i should wear them but she wasn’t arguing with me. I still got good grades without them I made the honor roll junior and senior year in high school. When I was a teenager my mom said you liked them when you were 5 I said I wasn’t a teenager then. Teenager is highly understandable not to want to wear them. I’m still not crazy about wearing them since the only type of hearing aid are the BTE kind. The BTE kind is the only option. Since I have a nerve loss. The ones I had were very big. My mom said I don’t hear as well as everyone else does that sound kind of insulting? It kind of gets me mad because there are people who can’t hear at all. A majority of people have normal hearing but there are deaf people out there.

Have you learned another way to communicate? Sign language or cued speech? I know of many stories of kids who wore their hearing aids because their parents made them, and then learned ASL and ditched the aids altogether, relying on interpreters for their education and aligning themselves with culturally Deaf norms and habits.

There are many good books out there you can pick up on this topic, one great one is “A Journey into a Deaf-World”. I think you’d be surprised how many Deaf people- both those who use sign language and those who are oral- go through similiar situations. Good luck!
