Is this a trick question?
An amplifier can magnify the intensity of sound waves by a factor of 1,000. If a 30 decibel sound is fed into the amplifier, how many decibels will come out?
I multiplied 30 by 1,000 (which is of course, 30,000) but there’s NO WAY you can put a 30 decibel sound into an amp and get THAT MANY decibels! Everybody would go deaf! I don’t know that this is a trick question, but there’s definitely something they’re not telling me!
decibels are a logarithmic scale. Every factor of 10 increase to the power is a 10 decibel increase.
Log (1000) = 3, so when the power increases by x1000 the decibel sound intensity increases by +30.
