How does the wrist BP cuff compare to the regular arm BP cuff in accuracy?

Short answer: They’re less accurate.

The most accurate BP measuring device is an invasive line – which is inconvenient unless you’re currently in a hospital’s ICU.

For non invasive blood pressure measurement, the most accurate device is an arm cuff with a mercury manometer. This is because all other devices require calibration to maintain their accuracy, but mercury will always show the correct readings as there are no mechanical or moving parts to break down or deteriorate. You will note that on all digital BP devices there is also a list of conditions which make the reading unreliable, like irregular heart beat.

As for the placement of the cuff, wrist BP devices can be fairly accurate, if the wrist is held at the level of the heart when the machine is working. If the wrist is in different positions every time the reading is taken the readings will be incomparable and wildly different.
