Baby Urine

can the smell of cat urine harm an baby during pregnancy?
I volunteer at a humane society, and today another woman called in to do community service, but said that due to her pregnancy, she could not be around the cats because the cat urine could affect the baby? I think she said something about it affecting the sex of the fetus. Is that true? Or just her being a little crazy?
No it’s true. Cat pee can contain harmful parasites that can harm the fetus. Not to mention the HORRIBLE smell of ammonia!
When you are pregnant, your exposure to a cat’s urine and feces through his litter box puts you at a risk of developing an infection called toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasmosis is spread through a parasite, Toxoplasma gondii. Cats contract this parasite through birds, mice, raw meats, and soil. The parasite then multiplies in your cat’s intestines and is spread through his waste. Although anyone is at risk of contracting toxoplasmosis, pregnant women especially are advised to exercise caution, as the parasite can have dire consequences to your fetus.
