Umbilical Hernia – Should I Have the Procedure?
Hi everyone,
I’m 34 and in fair shape (I’m 6′1 and 225 lbs), and my regular doctor says I have a small umbilical hernia (I think from helping my father-in-law move some heavy stuff in his garage). It’s a small bulge in my belly button – it’s mostly just annoying and unsightly. There is no pain…just weakness in the area. Size is maybe .5 inch or so.
I got a second opinion from a bariatric specialist MD and he confirmed the diagnosis. I’m thinking about having the surgery, but I’m worried about the recovery, infection, mesh vs. non-mesh. Are there any good free (and trustworthy) websites to read reviews of my Dr?
For those of you in the medical field or if you’ve had this procedure, what are the considerations? I have some anxiety and don’t know what questions to ask. Any help is welcome and appreciated.
I work for a surgeon and I can tell you that if you’re worried about him/her having to use mesh, then get it repaired sooner rather than later! If you wait, the defect in your fascia will become bigger, requiring mesh rather than just suture; and you also run the risk of a loop of bowel or mesentary getting stuck up there as well; then it has the potential of becoming an emergency surgery.
A small umbilical hernia can be repaired by oversewing the fascial defect with some O-Vicryl suture or better yet, some O Nurolon suture. The post-op recovery period isn’t too bad…….remember that everyone heals at a different rate though; it’s an “individual” thing. Don’t put it off though; you’ll be glad you had it taken care of ASAP!
