How does HEART DISEASE affect BOWEL MOVEMENT?
I’ve been noticing in COPD and CHF patient in my family a strange pattern regarding bowel movement for about a year now: She has not gone through half her lunch or dinner when she has to move over to her bedside commode, most of the time it’s only urine, but a lot is also feces.
I would always wonder if it was the lung problem or the heart. Lately I was inclined to think it was the heart because it all points to the fact that her heart is weak, complicated with the emphysema, which of course makes it worse. Besides her primary doctor had said couple of years earlier that he was more concerned w/ her heart than her lungs, although these are pretty blackened by emphysema.
Then today I came across something on internet which explains that heart conditions affect bowel movement. It doesn’t say why, though.
Do you know how it affects it?
As a nurse, I have never come accros anything that states CHF or COPD will affect a bowel movement…
The only thing I could tell you is that with both CHF and COPD, fatigue is a major problem. The patient becomes very short of breath with physical exertion. Severely ill patients will become short of breath at rest, with no exertion at all.
Eating does stimulate bowel movements though… And being older, the patient may lose the ability to hold. So during the meal, the patient must go as soon as the urge comes due to difficulty holding it.
Additionally, CHF patients are typically put on a drug called LASIX, to prevent fluid buildup which is hard on the heart. To get rid of the fluid, it will make the patient pee alot. The patient may have to pee at awkward times and may also pee quite frequently. This is an expected action of LASIX. Remember it has to get rid of water, so the heart can pump easier.
Remember since the patient with CHF or COPD can become easily fatigued or over exerted, it is important to take Rest periods and go slow.
