Orthodontics: How much can you over-erupt a tooth with braces?

Does anyone know what the least amount you can pull a tooth up or down with braces? Is is a few milimetres? An answer from someone who knows would be much appreciated!

You can move a tooth as much as you want up with braces.. Some time we extract a tooth by orthodontically moving it out, to regenerate the bone before puting an implant.
you cant push down (intrude) a lot.. the rooth would resorb.
