How do I know if I really have a torn acl?

I wen to the doctors today and they did some x-rays, no MRIS just regular x-rays. Then the surgeon guy examined my knee and he said it was a torn acl. He made plans for me to get the surgery done already and I didn’t even get an MRI. I can barely walk though.

An experienced orthopedic surgeon can diagnose the injury by listening to your history and manual tests. He or she can feel the instability during the hands-on testing. (There is a reason they go to Med School and have years of Residency)

MRI’s are usually done to confirm and evaluate for other possible injuries. Some insurance plans may require a MRI before authorizing surgery (thus an additional $1000 of medical costs).

After tearing your ACL, it is ideal to spend about 2-3 weeks rehabbing before surgery. However, the time frame does not have to be exact. Yes some people function well without their ACL, but not usually in sports that involve running & cutting. (There are exceptions past & present in the NFL)

A brace would give support, but really only the true ACL type braces that require a physician’s prescription. (about $1200 including the fitting fee) Knee sleeves will provide compression and thus help with the daily symptoms, but they don’t provide the stability of a true brace.
