Why is there often urine on the toilet rim?

Many times when I lift the seat on the commode there is urine on the rim (the part that’s actually part of the commode, not the part you sit on). It’s right on the top edge, and I KNOW how to “go” without getting it there. I live here with my husband, 2 dogs and a cat. None of the 4-legged pets uses the commode.
