Contour Blood Glucose

Contour Blood Glucose
What is a normal Blood Glucose reading?

my grandmother is non-diabetic but now her glucose reading after a meal is 6.1 <- i mean SIX POINT ONE !!!!!!!!!!! :D

is this a border-line of diabetes or not ? is this normal ?

LOOL , everyone says a normal reading is about 180 ..

the little machine (CONTOUR) that tests her blood gives numbers that vary from 6 , 7 , 8 ..

please answer respectfully :D

thaaaaaaaaaaaaank you :)

Unfortunately, dear lady, it seems that not everyone realises [realizes, if you are one of my American cousins] that you’re using the International Standard measurement of glucose reading … mmol/l (millimoles per litre), whereas in America they use a different measuring system called mg/dL (milligrams per deciLiter). (The way to convert one to the other is to either multiply, or divide, by 18. i.e. 10 mmol/l would be equivalent to 180 mg/dL.)

It really depends on how soon after eating your grandmother tested her glucose level. Normally, unless you’re pregnant, you wouldn’t test until two hours after eating. The blood sugar (glucose) level then should be lower than 7.8 mmol/l (140 mg/dL), and preferably below 6.1 mmol/l (110 mg/dL). (Many non-diabetic’s blood glucose level would be below 5.5 mmol/l (99 mg/dL).)

The level of 180 … which, I presume, refers to the American measuring system of mg/dL is spouted by people who know very little about diabetes, so pay no attention to that.

I’m not sure why, exactly, you’re testing your grandmother’s blood sugar (glucose) levels, but you’d be better off testing her blood sugar level first thing in a morning, before she’s eaten anything or had anything to drink (apart from plain water). The level then should be between 3.9 and 5.5 mmol/l (70 and 99 mg/dL).

Is your grandmother experiencing any symptoms that might point towards diabetes, or has her doctor advised you to test her blood sugar levels? If there’s some concern, it would be best if the blood testing were carried out either by the doctor him/herself or his/her practice nurse. They’d know, then, whether further testing was required.

Whatever the outcome, I wish both yourself and your grandmother the very best of luck for a long, happy, healthy life.
