Taking the Blood Pressure with a Stethoscope
Doctors have sphygmomanometer for measuring blood pressure, so they cannot solely depend on their Littman stethoscope or even a cardiology stethoscope to measure a patient’s blood pressure. Besides, that is the reason why sphygmomanometers do have a stethoscope with them, right?
A doctor is naturally skilled enough to take the blood pressure of the patient with his/her skills and a help from his/her sphygmomanometer and stethoscope. However, even they have to practice it since it’s a tricky method to do.
The cuff of the sphygmomanometer should be deflated first before placing it around the arm of the patient. It should fit properly, but not very tightly.
After than, the chest piece of the Littman stethoscope or cardiology stethoscope (these are the preferred ones over MDF stethoscope and pediatric stethoscope) should be put just a little below the cuff and above the elbow line.
If everything is set, the blood pressure taker should pump the bulb. It is important to look out for the pressure gauge because for kids, the pressure should not go above the 150 mark.
While listening to what is coming out of the earpieces, take note of these and of any irregularities that you might encounter. After hearing the systolic and the diastolic blood pressure, release the air in the cuff by opening the air valve of the sphygmomanometer.
It might be hard to do blood pressure taking with MDF stethoscope and pediatric stethoscope since they are not designated for that kind of task.
Taking blood pressure is hard at first, but with regular training, one will get the hang of it in no time.
