Why is the touch pad on my laptop so hot?

I have a Dell studio 15 which is relatively new (about 3-4 months old) Recently I have noticed that the touch pad gets rather warm. The vent directly under the touch pad doesn’t overheat. It’s just the touch pad area. I do occasionally use the laptop on soft surfaces such as cushions or on a bed. Would that have affected it? I heard sending it back to dell won’t do anything. Any ideas?

If your using it on cushions the laptop wont have a constant air flow. There is a vent of the bottom of the laptop usually, this can be for bringing air into the laptop or getting rid of hot air. if this is sealed then the same hot air stays in the laptop which heats everything up.

However you say theres a vent under the touch pad. Maybe the fan in the vent blows the hot air up onto the touchpad, this could be why its getting so hot.

I would suggest stop using it on a soft surface and get a tray or something just to that it has a good air flow which keeps it cool
