What do people think about deaf and hard of hearing?

Well, I’m hard of hearing and I’m wanting to know why people think we are just deaf and dumb?
My idea of this is that I think that all of us are really smart too we should be equal to everyone.
Why does everyone think we are different? Why do people make such a big deal? Sorry if this offends anyone..
