Older cat won’t use cat box??

I have an older cat, she’s 12. She won’t use the cat box any more and I don’t know why. It is automatic, so it’s always clean, and it’s not the mechanism, because she won’t use a traditional cat box either. She ‘goes’ right in front of it on the floor, and if there is a towel or other article of clothing on the floor, (the cat box is in the laundry room), she goes on the item of clothing, or rug. I’ve had to throw out 2 rugs, so stopped putting them down. We got some of those disposable underpads that you put in beds under people who are bedridden, the ones with plastic on the bottom, and now she goes on those but I’d really like to get her back to using the litter box. Any advice would be appreciated.

First off, you may want to phone a vet because when cats stop using their litter box after they have used it for so long, they may be sick. That is their only way of being able to let you know that they are not well.

If you get past that and she has no health problems, then there is this type of litter you can buy that is supposed to attract cats to use the litter. I will give you the link for that:

I think that they sell that at Petsmart and you may be able to find that at other places.
