Need help with a math problem…?

I have a 55 gallon aquarium that I am turning into a vivarium. I need a drainage layer of 2 inches of clay pellets. The dimensions of the 55 gallon are 48 1/4 x 12 3/4 x 21 (L x W x H). How much clay pellets do I need? I was told when I called the store 10L bag was $9.99 and 45 lbs bag was $50.00.

The volume of clay pellets you need is the product of the length, width, and depth: 48.25″ x 12.75″ x 2″, which is 1230.375 cubic inches. Each cubic inch is 2.54 cm on a side, so to convert to metric, multiply by 2.54^3. This volume is equal to 20162.23387 cubic centimeters (cc). 1 cc is 1 ml, so this is about 20.162… liters. You’d need just a little more than two of the 10L bags. You’d need to know the weight of this bag or the volume of the second to figure out which is the better value.

In my opinion, if you are not going to use the clay pellets for anything else, then even buying 3 of the 10L bags (~$30) would be a better bet than the $45 one. I’d just buy 2 of 10L bags and have just under 2″ of depth.
