Duty Bath Tub

How do I clean “sewage” from bath towels?
I had a little incident where my bathtub drain got backed up and water was actually coming up out of the drain slowly for a couple of days. I used a bucket to get the bulk of the water out of the tub, but I used bath towels to soak up the last of it.
I’m not sure what kinds of things were in that water, but I’ll just consider it to be sewage, for lack of a better word.
I’m going to clean the bath towels in the washing machine using laundry detergent, but what else should I add to the hot wash water? Would ammonia be strong enough? The towels are colored, so I wasn’t sure about using bleach, but if that is what is necessary to get them clean, then I will use it.
Any suggestions? And would one heavy duty wash cycle be adequate or are two washings necessary?
If it’s Truly sewage I wouldn’t chance it, I would just toss them. They have towels on sale at Wal-Mart all the time.=)
