I recently had a rod removed from my left femur. What is the healing process for the inner bone?

I am 57 yrs old. The rod was placed in my femur when I was 15 yrs old. I had a bone transplant in 1965. I never experienced problems prior to Sept 2007. At that time, I began to experience pain in my leg. By Dec 2007, I would barely walk without the use of a cane. When I finally sought medical advise, an X-Rays reflected that the rod was protruding through my hip bone and pressing again the soft tisues in my hip. That was cause of the excruciating leg pain. The surgeon said the rod was not needed, so it was successfully removed one week ago. I would like to know how the removal of the rod affected the inner tissues of the bone, and how long the internal healing process might last. As advised, I am not putting full pressure on my leg at this time. I am using a walker. I’m scheduled to see the surgeon next week. He previously told me that I can return to work on that day, since walking is a miminum part of my required duties.

The rod was not placed inside of the bone, but beside it. It works like a splint, and it is merely kept in place by a few screws.
Once the tiny holes are healed in a couple months, you should not have any pain.
Now the tissue the rod was rubbing on will heal more quickly.
