How many service members have died since the beginning of the Iraq war that were non-combat related?
World-wide, not just Iraq. Looking for accidents, murders, training incidents, etc. All services. On and off duty.
About 60 per 100,000 per year. Looking at the DOD numbers that run from 1980 – 2004, I would guess about 6,000 from 1/1/2003 to 12/31/2006.
If you look at the charts for the 1980s and 1990s you will notice a steady drop in the Accident column. This reflects the crack down on drunk driving that started in the mid/late 1980s.
