what would be the best type of fabric to use to make reusable shopping bags?

i want to make some reusable shopping bags, but i dont know what type of fabric to use. i want them to be durable, but also easily washable, so i wasnt sure if just cotton fabric would be ok, or if i should use something else. i dont want it to be a real bulky fabric either (i know it depends on the size of the bag) but something that can fold up nicely to carry in my purse.

Cotton is my choice. It is not bulky, is economical, washes well and comes in many prints and colors.

Upholstery and drapery fabric does not wash well. Denim and duck cloth are a bit boring.

If you decide on muslin, make sure it is the not the cheap, thin variety.
