How to test an engine for sure?

I have two wheelchair motors (4 poles) that worked before Christmas. The system controller wheelchair and a joystick, however, the elements may have suffered water damage due to where it was stored in the holidays. The stock of works by the controller, but the engines are not working. I guess it's the driver has failed, or perhaps engines. Manual brake motors four positive relationships, negative, brake, engine positive negative, and the engine. "I can use a car battery to directly connect to the dealer and motor neg. or something bad?

I would use an insulation tester to see if there is a short between coils.Or can use a normal multimeter and the test of resistance among coils.if get a reading of an overload or a reading that is less than 1 ohm, then the coils are screwed. You can use a battery to test it, but carry a spare battery with the same voltage and the amplifier itself / number of hours, otherwise you may burn up the coils. Or you can simply ask a friend with an electrician to test the thing for you and buy a beer for effort.He must be able to do so with little effort.
