How can I make riding a bike more comfortable?

I have a mountain bike that I don’t get much use out of for the simple fact that when I ride for more than 10 minutes, it makes my butt really sore. I got a gel seat cushion cover that I put over my seat that is supposed to help but it doesn’t. I’d love to bike for long periods of time for exercise but this is problem preventing me from doing so. Any suggestions?
