How can I purchase an inexpensive blood glucose monitor & strips w/o a prescription?

I pass my blood glucose test but something is not right, so I’m going to keep a log to try to show my doctor. He doesn’t think anything is wrong with me, so I can’t get any discount with my insurance. What is the cheapest way to get hold of a monitoring kit?
Not that it’s relevant to the question, but starting when I was pregnant I would have a hyperglycemic episode after I ate certain meals. Three years later, I’ve just learned to deal with it by watching my diet but I still underestimate it occasionally and it makes my life miserable.

You don’t need a prescription to buy a monitor OR strips. I originally just got a Walgreens monitor and 50 test strips at my doctor’s recommendation. He wanted me to test periodically because of the family history of diabetes and it is much cheaper than doing it at the lab.

I have had what my doc (an internist) called pseudo-hyperglycemia for years. You have many of the same symptoms of hyperglycemia without actually having it. It is due to a sudden drop in blood sugar, although the final numbers may be perfectly normal. Nearly always, a meal high in carbohydrates and low in protein or fat preceded the problem. I can usually eliminate an attack very quickly (for want of a better word) by eating a protein or small hard candy).

My Uncle always passed his fasting blood glucose test. They never did an A1C until I told him he should have that done. He already has significant damage from diabetes, so likely went undiagnosed for a decade. Your personal monitoring can show you if you have a similar problem without the A1C.
