Is Nurse Director/Head Nurse BOSS of all nurses?

The nurse who is in charge of all the nurses in a health care facility may have one of many titles as determined by the organizational structure of the facility. They are in a general term Nurse Executives. Sometimes known as the Chief Nursing Officer in a corporate structure, or Director of Nursing in a hospital, though the exact title may be slightly different.

The title of Head Nurse is normally used for the RN in charge of a unit of a hospital or facility. These Head Nurses will fall under the guidance of Nursing Supervisors for each area, and then the supervisors may fall under one or more Assistant Director of Nursing.

Usually in larger health care facilities the Chief Nurse Executive will have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a Master of Science in Nursing Administration or another Specialty and a Masters in Health Care Administration, Often they have Doctorate degrees in very large facilities and hospital systems.

Their job is not only to manage the nursing care quality, but they will have many departments below them covering quality improvement, informatics, education and training, all the nursing department, plus they will manage the staffing (with the assistance of human resources) and the budget for the department. Nursing staff is the largest department of any hospital so normally the Chief Nursing Executive falls directly under the overall Chief Executive Officer for the Hospital. Many of the Chief Nursing Executives eventually become the Chief Executive Officer for some Hospitals.
