What is the best way to apply an ice pack?

I have patella tendinitis (inflammation of the knee tendons) so after I finished playing soccer yesterday I iced my knee as usual. But I made the mistake of taping the ice-pack tightly to my knee and after that I took a warm/hot shower. Now I have blisters on my knee and it’s hurting like crazy.
I plan to ice it again, but this time I won’t tape the ice pack. So, is this a good idea and what should I do from here?

This is gonna sound really off-the-wall but frozen vegetables, especially corn or peas, work a lot better than an icepack. The bag of veggies is more flexible than the icepack and while the veggies provide nice cold comfort to your aches, they don’t have the same intense cold that an icepack does. It’s plenty cold to ease the inflammation, just not cold enough to give you frostbite. Wrap your bag of frozen peas (don’t open the bag LOL) in some paper towels or a thin cloth to absorb any condensation that forms, and use an ace bandage or saran wrap to bind it lightly in place. Don’t wrap it too tight, just barely enough to keep the bag from falling off.
