when taking bp, why is the cuff inflated above systolic pressure, wont the artery blow up?

when taking blood pressure in the old fashioned way (not with a digital sphygmomanometer) , why is the cuff inflated above systolic pressure, wont the artery blow up?

When you inflate the cuff above systolic pressure it compresses the artery and stops blood flow past the cuff, as you deflate the cuff the cuff pressure will eventually equal systolic pressure and blood will again flow. So the first time you hear the sound that means cuff pressure equals systolic pressure and you know it.

The artery won;t blow up when it’s occluded because the blood will be diverted down another unoccluded artery. If the cuff is inflated too long your arm will fall asleep but that’s about it.
