Tips knee injury? How long should support the knee last?

I had an injury on January 7 year last year .. The sports doc said it was a lateral meniscus tear .. I asked a surgeon who recommended regular knee and said it was probably a strain .. I have carried the knee when I been supporting year .. Should there be a time when you should not use at all? my knee will probably be lower today wearing a brace? strengthin tips?
