Broken Patella–is it okay to walk around?
Hello:
I’ve read several posts regarding a broken patella, but I don’t think I saw this question. My doctor said I didn’t need surgery–at least not at this point. He put me in a knee stabilizer and told me to keep my knee as straight as possible as much as possible. I live alone and don’t have anyone to help me run errands, fix meals, etc. Btw, my knee doesn’t hurt–entire leg is cramping though.
I’ve never had a broken bone before, so this may be an ignorant question. If you’re wondering why I didn’t ask my doctor about this…I went to County and everything was pretty rushed…I don’t think I pointedly asked him about walking around (although I assumed I could–a little–because he said I could take a shower)…can’t get in touch with him over the phone easily, because, again…I went to County.
So, my question is: Do you know if it’s okay to walk around with a crutch as a support? Or am I supposed to sit and/or lie around all day?

Well, physically you may be able to walk around (although with some pain), but it’s really, really not a good idea.
the patella moves a great deal during a normal step, because it is pulled upward by the quadriceps tendon and downward by the patellar tendon. a lot of movement is not good for a broken bone trying to heal. it’s best to keep it as stable as possible, and if you use it too much, you might re-injure it to the point that it requires surgery. it will also cause a lot of swelling and slow down the recovery time.
if you can find someone to help you out with groceries, etc, that’s what i would recommend. if not, then at least be sure to leave it in a stabilizer and use a crutch as much as possible.
