Positioning Wheelchair

Pressure sores?
What is the best way to prevent these pressure sores on a person who is in a wheelchair all day and in the same position all night in bed? I know to change position is best, but in this case impossible to do. I have been washing the area wuth plain soap and water, drying well, and using a little Conatrane cream to massage the area to keep the blood supply through. It is not broken, but this is what I’m afraid of. It’s the area at the tailbone. Any suggestions?
That is a most interesting question as having worked for years on sick wards where the patients were bedridden the so called back round consisted of exactly what you are doing. A good massage with soap and water and Conatrane cream. Before cream came into fashion so to speak all pressure points were still massaged with soap and water but after drying a good massage with surgical spirit said to harden the skin was used and I remember the Ward sisters despairing when we could no longer us it. Those we were able to get out of bed for a few hours always had a rubber ring to sit on but as you may of guessed I am talking of old fashioned bedside nursing. You could try bumping up alternate sides every two hours with pillows just to take a little pressure off but otherwise I think what you are doing is very commendable and understand your concern. The very best to you and keep up the good work.
