Is it safe for my child to go to a toddler bed?

My son is almost 17 months and left his bed for the first time yesterday evening. He followed up to 4 several times later. The next night I went to the bedside to reduce the risk of hurting her. I put a door in the hallway so if you get up, could only enter my room. This does not work because awoke at 3:00 and said "mama" the other side of the door. Obviously, you can upload anything.
