Powerchairs and scooters whats the best and why?

My mom needs a powerchair or scooter but she doesn’t know what brand to buy.What is your experience with them or someone you know.
I would also like websites that she can check out concerning ratings and pro’s and con’s
My mom is on oxygen and has severe scoliosis

She needs to talk to a person who is expert in seating to know what she needs unless she is getting one just because she is having a harder time walking.

Powerchairs are considerably more expensive than scooters. To transport them you need to have an accessible vehicle as powerchairs are difficult to take apart and put back together if they can be at all. Powerchairs are designed for people who need upper trunk support. They are more difficult and expensive to be repaired. They are very heavy.

Scooters are for people who can hold their body erect and can handle being jostled a lot. They can usually fold down or break down so that they can be transported in small vehicle or trunks. They can often be repaired on the spot rather then be sent away for repair. They are less expensive to buy, repair and maintain. They come in style that are designed to be used only indoors, only outside, or both.

If you do not have a doctor’s prescription for one – you can often get them second hand. People often use them only for a few months at the end of their lives and you can get good deals on them.

Unless your mom is very disabled and has a specific prescription you best best is to get something second hand and evaluate what s available versus look for a specific powerchair or scooter.

Additional: With severe scoliosis she probably has more limited choices. She will probably need upper trunk support and a scooter is likely to be insufficient. She may also need one where the back has many options to accommodate her curvature.

In your situation I would first get recommendations from a therapist and then evaluate those specific recommendations. Go to a medical supply store and ask to try out the ones on your recommended list. If you have sevral medical supplies stores in the area- check them all out. Ask the people who sell them to tell you their thoughts – but remember they want to sell some brands more than others.

Once you think you have made a decision – try to find one like it to rent for a week. It may not be exactly the way hers would be modified for her but it would give you some sense of what it is like.
