Sleeve Open

Do you wear your heart on your sleeve? Do you think it’s a good or bad way to live?
I have always been a kind of “up front” person, but always try to do it politely. I mean, you can say almost anything if you say it with tact.
Has it been a positive thing in your life, or a negative? Sometimes I think I am too open to others, and of course, there are always those who take advantage of it, but for the most part it has worked for me.
Anyway, I don’t think you can really change that kind of thing.
What about you?
I am a very sensitive and empathic person. This has been a plus in my field of nursing but still occaisionally has its drawbacks. I am able to really feel the pain of others and it often makes me sad. My husband, the rational logical intuitive thinking guy that he is cannot begin to understand me sometimes. The other day while waiting for labs to be drawn I struck up a conversation with an elderly gentleman sitting next to me. ( I easily talk to strangers and people all over strike up conversations with me too…..just one of those faces) Anyway I listened to this 89 year old speak of his wife with Alzheimers now in a nursing home and having to take the bus to visit who now has a lien on his home by the nursing home. He spoke of the care/ or not that she was receiving and his frustration at it all and how sometimes he just wanted to end his life. I came away entirely sad and shed tears for this fellow and his situation. So in this situation where I could do nothing but listen, I probably only gained a blue mood and ruined eye make-up. But in my job I think it makes me a better nurse, my patients know I really care about them. I am also the rescuer of turtles in the road, earthworms on the sidewalk, frogs in the pool, you name it I try to save it. I beleive there are good points and bad to being like me. I cannot just block something out and not see it or think about it or feel it. My husband can “zone out” and just not think about something. How do you do that? As he drives he doesn’t see the chipmunk making a mad dash across the road in front of him, he’s watching the cars. How does he NOT see the chipmunk. I see everything. I wouldn’t change it though because it gives me more appreciation of the people, places, and things around me. It enriches my life even if at the occaisional expense of make-up.
