A test tube with HCl, and magnesium is added. What happens to a burning splint into the mouth of the tube?

A test tube size half is half full of 6M hydrochloric acid. The specimen is placed in a test tube holder and three rounds of magnesium are added. A splint is the wood burning in the mouth test tube. I'm pretty sure that the hydrogen gas is released (Mg +2 HCl -> MgCl2 + H2), but what should happen to the flame and how we identify the gas?
