What is the best stethoscope for an emt?

I’m an emt student right now, and am guessing that the stethoscopes we get in the kits we buy aren’t the greatest. But should I spend the money for the cardiologist grade, I’ve heard Littmann is the best, or is that really not necessary for emt/paramedic work? I figured I would just stick with the one I have now through the rest of class, even though it’s kind of long for me. I’m only 5′2”

I have found the best steth for use in EMS is any half decent single tubing steth. Boundtree and EMS Supply sells Precision Scopes which I purchase for my trucks as they have good tone range, are really comfortable, sturdy and single tube. Double tubes will bang together and cause artifact noise, plus two tubes pick up twice the road noise and vibrations of the single tubes. Don’t waste your money on expensive steths as they are 1: way too sensitive for EMS scenes and transports, 2: pick up way too muck artifact with road noise 3: are way, way, way too expensive as you WILL LOSE several steths in the lifetime of your EMS career. I have been a street monkey for 30 years and can not begin to tell you the number of steths I have lost, both expensive ones I’ve bought, given to me or provided by well meaning managers to cheap disposable gimmick steths provided as bribes or door prizes….all end up the same….LOST on some go to hell run where chaos is common occurrence. Find a single tube steth you like and play the game of “HOW LONG WILL I HOLD ONTO IT!?” Also good luck with class, God protect you in your new role and welcome to the CHAOS, Little EMS SISTER!!!!
