What is rattling inside the flag of my stethoscope?

I inherited a stethoscope by a nurse, and within the head stethoscope on both sides, I hear a rattling noise. Like a tiny piece of metal drop or loose and floating around. Is it broken or is a necessary part of helping aa acoustic stethoscope?
