Support Splint

Support Splint
How to get rid of shin splints if i have to continue to run?

I keep getting shin splints from running. I have expensive running shoes i have insoles to support my feet but it seems every time i run i get them. I will rest for a couple weeks but then the day i start running again they come back. Can i just tape my legs, take some ibuprofen and run through it will they eventually get used to it and heal?

I’ve had shin splints many times before and I’ve been able to get them to go away within about a week each time without taking time off.

During the day you need to spell the cursive alphabet with your toe, moving only your ankle. Do this a bunch of times each day. There is nothing significant about the cursive alphabet other than it generally gives a good even full range of motion. This exercise strengthens the muscles that are irritated by shin splints.

Then, after you work out each day, you need to ice. The best way to ice shin splints is to freeze water in a paper or styrofoam cup. When you are ready to ice, peel the cup away so that you are left with a large chunk of ice with a few sharp edges on it. Take the edge of the ice and press it in between the muscle and the bone on the front of your shin. Slowly slide the ice up and down along your shin where it hurts for about 15 minutes or so. It is important to use the ice cup rather than a bag of ice so that you can get underneath your shin bone, where the irritation often is.

I know this can take a while, but it is well worth the time. Trust me. Good luck with your running.
