If You Can Believe Your Eyes & Ears $2.59 As they developed and incorporated more of their own social lives into their music, the Mamas and the Papas became the model for other dysfunctionally self-involved groups like Fleetwood Mac. But none of that is evident on their 1966 debut, If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears; rather, it’s the quartet’s dreamy vocal interaction that is the highlight here. “California Dreamin’” is a touching hone… |

Eventually, it evolved into this vanity production for Barbra Streisand, with Kris Kristofferson as the designated stud muffin. The story remains the same: A superstar on the decline meets a young singer on the way up. They marry as their career trajectories intersect, and his e… |

Pretty Baby $4.18 A semi-scandal upon its release in 1978, this Louis Malle film is set in a turn-of-the-century, New Orleans bordello and focuses on a girl named Violet (then-child actress Brooke Shields) whose imminent twelfth birthday signals her “readiness” to become a career prostitute. Typical of Malle, the outwardly forbidden nature of the story and relationships within are morally obscured by the imme… |
