Stethoscope and B.P. Cuff recommendations?

I am a nursing student and I am wondering what type of bp cuff and stethoscopes are decent. I see a lot of them from different brands and price ranges and I am just wanting to buy one now that I can use for several years, but some of them are very, very pricey. Recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

As for the answer that says “make sure you have a bell…”, ALL stethoscopes have bells. That’s the part you place on the patient. That being said, here’s my answer:

Stethoscope- I recommend asking different nurses if you can try out their ’scopes to see which one works best for you (make sure you have clean ears though- I will NEVER let a “nasty-looking” person borrow mine!). I, as a paramedic, personally prefer the Littman Master Classic II. It has a one-sided bell, so I’m not getting a lot of background noise when I’m listening. The bell is pressure-sensitive, meaning you pick up high/low noises depending on the pressure you put on the bell. That’s just what works best for me though. Lots of people prefer a different model, but the majority of people go with the Littman brand. Try before you buy! You can get by with a cheaper one until you figure out what you actually want.

BP Cuffs- The only time you’re going to need this is during class, and for practice (unless you’re like me & your family calls you to check their BP all the time!). Hospitals, doctor’s offices, etc. all have their own equipment that you’ll use when you get there (whether at clinicals, or after you’re hired).

You can find “BP kits” online that run between $20-30, and have the cuff & a Sprague-style stethoscope included (and you can pick the colors!). These are sufficient for your school needs, and you’ll be amazed at how many of your classmates go the same route. Then you’re not looking back at how much money you wasted on buying something that you really didn’t want!
